Last Saturday, Clarissa presented a poster at the 2018 Hutton Honors College Research Symposium! At the symposium, Clarissa discussed her research on seasonal differences in the gut microbiome and behavior in male and female Siberian hamsters. Congratulations, Clarissa!
This past weekend, Kristyn, Clarissa, Kat, and Jessica gave poster presentations at the 2018 Animal Behavior Conference, an annual meeting hosted by Indiana University’s own Center for the Integrative Study for Animal Behavior (CISAB). Way to go, ladies!
Today, Kristyn gave a wonderful Ph.D. dissertation seminar entitled, “Modulation of the Neuroendocrine System, Gut Microbiome, and Social Behavior” and successfully defended her dissertation to her committee. Congratulations, Dr. Sylvia!
On March 23, Greg was honored with the Daniel J. Ziegler Award by his alma mater, Villanova University. This award is given by the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences to an alumnus who has made distinguished contributions to the field of psychology, other fields, or society in ways that represent the mission of the department and the university. Kat’s mini-review on neural androgen synthesis and aggression in seasonally breeding animals has been accepted for publication in Frontiers in Endocrinology! In her paper, Kat discusses evidence for a novel neuroendocrine pathway for territorial aggression, in which adrenal dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) serves as an important precursor for neurally-derived androgens during the non-breeding season.

Kat was awarded a Common Themes in Reproductive Diversity (CTRD) NIH Predoctoral Fellowship for the 2018-2019 academic year! This fellowship is awarded annually by the Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior (CISAB) at Indiana University to outstanding graduate students whose research focuses on behavior and physiology in animal systems or humans.

Kristyn’s manuscript on the influence of acute lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration on immune system activation and the gut microbiome of male and female hamsters has been accepted for publication in Physiological Reports! In this study, Kristyn showed that a single, modest dose of LPS activates an immune response and reduces food intake and body mass, but does not alter microbial composition or diversity in the gut.

Kristyn’s manuscript on leptin as a predictor of reproductive state in healthy women has been accepted for publication in Reproductive Biology! This study was conducted in collaboration with former Demas Lab post-doc Tierney Lorenz and Dr. Julia Hieman from the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences.
